I have a weakness for anything with a story behind it and a love of combining old and new within a space.”

– Maggie S., Havenly Designer

Hello, Havenly! My name is Maggie. I’m an interior designer from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and a lover of all things home. For the past few years, I’ve been renovating and designing my own homes and documenting it on my blog, The Spiffy Company.

When I’m not designing spaces for Havenly clients, you can find me scouring the aisles of every flea market I can find to decorate my own space. I have a weakness for anything with a story and a love of combining old and new within a space.

My favorite part of every season is the very beginning. By the time one season comes to a close, I’m always very ready to welcome the next one with open arms. Fall is no exception! In fact, it might just be my favorite season. From the feel of chunky sweaters to the crunch of leaves beneath your boots, and smell of the crisp autumn air, there’s no denying the magic that surrounds this time of year. It only makes sense that we invite the beauty around us outside right into our homes.

So, how can you capture the essence of fall in your own home? Here are my 5 favorite tips for creating a cozy and inviting fall ambiance.

1. Try out Texture

Fall is all about texture. When I think of fall I think of cable knit, fuzzy fleece, faux fur, leather, and anything warm and cozy. But, these textures are good for more than just snuggling up on the sofa! Bring those seasonal textures into your home with pillows, throws, table runners, and other accessories that will add a touch of warmth to your space on those crisp fall nights.

2. Lean into Layers

You know those textures that I mentioned above? LAYER THEM! And, not only the textures but the patterns, too! Plaid is big this fall, so don’t be afraid to bring that pattern in and mix it with others as well. As long as you stick to a clear color scheme, layering patterns, textures, and textiles will create an atmosphere that feels warm, cozy, and put together—the perfect recipe for fall!

3. Set the Mood with Candles

I’m a huge fan of candles no matter the season, but the soft glow of candlelight sprinkled throughout the house on a cool fall evening takes cozy to an entirely new level. Pick up a candle with a seasonal scent like apple cider or grandma’s pumpkin pie for an autumn night that feels so nice you can practically taste it!

4. Have Fun with Foliage

Fresh flowers are always a great way to spruce things up inside, but for the fall season, why not think outside the box? Your backyard is a great source for beautiful foliage that will bring the season inside. A vase of branches covered in freshly turned leaves is a great way to brighten up your mantel, or a bowl of newly fallen pinecones will add some festive flavor to your dining room table. Plus, you can’t beat the price!

5. Embrace the Change

Fall is undoubtedly a time of change. The leaves change color, the temperatures get cooler, the sun sets sooner, so take a cue from nature and change things up inside, too. Whether you’re swapping out a piece of artwork for something a bit more seasonal, bringing in fall colors with nature-inspired accessories, or even just rearranging your furniture to freshen things up a bit, embrace the change outside for a fresh, new perspective inside. It’s amazing what a little change can do for the soul.
