When it comes to interior design regrets, we have plenty. From going too all-in on trends to committing a little too hard to the boring “millennial beige” aesthetic, our design team is happy to get candid about the faux pas they’ve made in their own homes.

But actual home buying regrets? That’s another (more expensive) story. But according to a survey from Bankrate, home buying regrets among millennials are rampant, with 64 percent of buyers aged 25 to 40 having regrets about their home purchase (compared just 33 percent of baby boomer buyers).

Home buying mistakes

More specifically, the biggest regret among millennial homebuyers was not being prepared for maintenance and other costs associated with homeownership, like having to shell out for a new water heater, air conditioner, or roof repair on a dime.

“It can cause a rude awakening if one fails to plan for inevitable expenses,” said Mark Hamrick, Bankrate’s senior economic analyst. “This is yet another reminder why making emergency savings a top priority is so important. Whether it is a roof repair stemming from age or storm damage, or the need to fix or replace heating, cooling or appliances, it isn’t a question whether such expenses arise, only when and how much they will cost.”

Home buying mistakes

Millennials were also more likely to be dissatisfied with physical characteristics of their home, as compared to Gen Xers and Boomers. A cool 14 percent of millennials feel that their home is either too big or too small, and 15 percent are unhappy with the location post-purchase.

“Because the market is so competitive, you have less time to make a decision on a homebuying purchase than you do on a laptop at Best Buy,” said Angelica Olmsted, an agent with RE/MAX Professionals Cherry Creek in Denver. “You’ve already had, possibly, a couple of offers not accepted, you feel that pressure to make a decision and put an offer in.”

To avoid home ownership regrets before you sign on the dotted line, Olmsted recommends referencing the inspection report to anticipate possible maintenance costs, create a budget early on and sticking to it, and finding the right agent that can reel you in if you’re starting to sacrifice too much out of desperation. “Having an agent who understands your wants and can push back when you need that is so important,” she adds. ““I have clients I just have not written for because I can tell they’re just in a desperation state.”
