If there’s one lesson we’ve learned about photography, it’s this: you don’t have to be a pro in order to take beautiful photos! Thankfully, photography applications such as Instagram and VSCO Cam have been doing all of the hard work for us. More than ever before, people have been ditching their DSLRs for their smartphones, documenting everything from a flavorful cup of coffee to their most-loved furry companions.
Another photo trend that has been sweeping our Instagram feeds are beautiful photos of interiors! We always enjoy when our clients share their progress on how their designs are coming along. For those of you who are Instagram newbies, here are six different ways to capture the perfect photo of your Havenly-decorated room.
1. Spruce up your space: Begin by fluffing the pillows and opening up the curtains! Make sure to organize any accessories that you have lying around the space, as they are a key element to completing the look! Use a level to straighten hung artwork and make sure that it’s in close proximities to the furniture, or as my mother always likes to say, “married to the design.”
2. Add fresh flowers: A fresh bouquet of blooms is an absolute must! These succulents help make the space seem more appealing and can even help brighten up the look and feel of the room. Our friends over at BloomPop offer a unique selection of fresh floral arrangements for a discounted price; use code HAVENLY at checkout for $10 off your order!
3. Focus on shooting at a low angle: Try to shoot the image straight on or at a low angle in order to give the room a unique depth and perception. This angle is especially beneficial if you are tying to showcase a patterned rug or coffee table details.
4. Pay particular attention to photo orientation: When shooting interiors, it’s important to remember that orientation is key! We always like to shoot lengthwise (landscape), rather than heightwise (portrait). A landscape shot is easier to ensure photo quality.
5. Photograph in natural light. The golden hour of the day is from 3pm to 6 p.m., when it’s bright and sunny outside. This will increase the resolution and ensure things look natural.
6. Filter the photo: Perfect your work with a photography editing application, such as VSCO or Instagram. Some of our favorite instagrammers swear by the valencia filter, while our personal favorite is lo-fi! The other great thing about editing your photos on the go is that you can customize the saturation of the image, sharpen the look , or even add a vignette!
