It’s our favorite time of year, aka awards season. The glitz and glamour (gowns, mostly) make us immensely happy. Plus, who doesn’t love movies. As interior designers, films often act as great inspiration. A good movie has a personality of its own, almost like a design client. So it’s always fun to imagine the spaces that fit a film to a tee. We did just that with some of this year’s best picture nominees (not all, as it didn’t feel quite right to imagine a space based on Dunkirk, etc.). Below, find our inspo images and thought about the films that had strong design directions this year.

The Post

The Post covers that lesser-known 70s newspaper scandal, the release of the Pentagon Papers. The movie delves into the world of government dealings, newspaperwomen, and scandal. Fittingly, any space inspired by the movie would have to be totally groovy but still classy, like the Post’s owner, Katherine Graham. The Wing‘s new Brooklyn branch is the perfect blend– retro inspired yet luxe and full of powerful boss ladies.

The Shape of Water

What better space to embody this film, a fantastical story of a mute woman and a mystical sea creature, than a bathroom fit for a mermaid princess? The iridescent tiles resemble the scales of the main character, as do the multilayered blue and green hues. The brass fixtures and vintage vanities also are the perfect nod to the midcentury setting and set design. Plus, the color palette couldn’t be a more perfect match for the set itself.

Phantom Thread

Paul Thomas Anderson’s drama about the troubled marriage of a couturier and a waitress is haunting and beautiful. But the film’s style is pure, luxurious glamour. Woodcock’s gowns use lush fabrics and color, and no room designed with the movie in mind could pass up that opportunity. Beautifully tailored textiles, expertly matched colors, and dramatic flourishes make this space a perfect fit.

Call Me By Your Name

Call Me By Your Name’s gorgeous setting in an ancient Italian villa inspires a relaxed, eclectic design style. Informed by history (oil paintings and Louis XIV furniture), but containing the multitudes of a family full of personality, this bedroom designed by the Novogratz felt right. Soft, faded colors, antiques mixed with newer pieces, and of course, the ever-present afternoon sun.
