Landing on a budget for certain pieces, let alone a whole home refresh can be difficult! We aren’t constantly purchasing sofas or window treatments, so how are we supposed to know how much they cost? There is a rule, however, that is good to keep in the back of your mind.
You Get What You Pay For
Imagine the $29.99 sweater that you bought. It’s great, right?! But it’s probably only going to be great this season. By next season, it will likely have pilled and maybe even shrunk. You got what you paid for. Everyone loves a good deal, but with furniture, you’ll end up spending a lot more in the long run if you don’t choose the best pieces upfront.
Take, for instance, these categories of home goods.
Without even feeling these products, you can see the differences! The silhouettes are much more refined and clean, the construction is tighter and the materials are more luxe. Purchasing something from the low budget tier will likely mean replacements in the next 2-3 years (if not shorter for the pillows). Purchasing items from the high budget tier will last you 5-8 years. It’s up to you to prioritize your purchases. Buying the cheaper option is totally fine, and sometimes better, but that comes with tradeoffs.
As we’ve discussed in prior posts, there are some items that make more sense to splurge on than others. Will a pillow really need to last you 5-8 years? Probably not. However, if you’re constantly using it and you want it to be extra soft and comfortable, it might make sense to splurge! Especially with larger items that you use often, like a sofa, we always recommend a higher quality option. In this case, not only is the $540 sofa option the least physically appealing, but it will also start to wear much earlier.
Hopefully this helps you envision different price points for different sets of items and why you will ultimately get what you pay for!
