Shelby’s harvest moon dinner party marked the end of the season in high style. The decor was incredible, but it was the food that really set the evening apart. Everything was fresh, with flavor combinations that brought together summery staples (like avocados) with colder-weather elements (like root vegetables and herbs). While Shelby’s spread was over-the-top amazing, it would be easy to choose a few dishes as inspiration for your own party. Plus, the photos are just too gorgeous not to share.

Appetizers

The first course was simple, perfect for a cocktail hour full of movement and conversation. Olives and grilled crostini brushed with garlic were the background for a showstopper: beet hummus. While it’s as simple to make as the regular chickpea spread, its flavor has a slightly bitter edge, and its brilliant color was the talk of the guests.

Soup

The first course stayed resolutely in the realm of summer with a refreshing chilled avocado and mint soup. It was deliciously cool in the still-warm sun, and its yogurt and beet garnish added texture and color. For a simple soup, it was sophisticated and beautiful.

Main Course

The main course was rightfully, the star of the show. Flank steak with raw zucchini and charred corn salsa verde was tender, the acidity of the salsa verde cutting the richness of the meat. A grilled romaine caesar salad provided a hefty vegetarian option, and proved satisfyingly crunchy.

The side dishes were a spectacular use of fresh veggies- grilled carrots with chermoula (an herb sauce) and feta was our favorite. The radicchio and green bean salad was also popular- its bright colors and peach garnishes were absolutely gorgeous. Artichokes with aioli and charred lemon rounded out the side dishes on a light note.

Dessert

As the owners of a sizable sweet tooth, dessert was probably our favorite part of the evening. fresh figs filled with mascarpone were bite sized delights, while grilled peaches paired with a creme anglais and oat crumble were sweet showstoppers.

Shelby’s menu created a spectrum of tastes and colors that worked beautifully to create a relaxed, casual atmosphere. Rather than worry about perfect plating and expensive ingredients, Shelby worked magic with simple, healthy, and delicious foods.
