I normally don’t like to talk about this, but I’ve always had insecurity issues about the size of my tiny apartment. As a result, I have serious apartment envy, and I know I’m not alone in this. But fear not! It’s not about the size of the apartment; it’s about what you can do with it. With some small apartment interior design help, any space can be looking a couple sizes bigger. Just learn The 3 C’s:

1. Color:  The first thing to consider when trying to make your room look bigger is color.  Bright colors like icy blues and light greens make a room seem much more open as they don’t absorb much light. Don’t believe me? Think about every dungeon you’ve ever seen in a movie. They’re always dark and cramped. But imagine if that dungeon were painted a brighter shade. Suddenly, it looks much bigger and way friendlier. Let some natural light in as well and your cramped dungeon apartment quickly becomes a welcome place to be locked up in.

2. Clutter: I’m a very sentimental person. I save absolutely everything, which makes my place overly cluttered. One day I decided to just start clearing things out.  Though daunting at first, the process of decluttering quickly becomes easy and almost fun. That stack of magazines that I said I would read two years ago? Gone. The weird statue that looks kind of like a penis if you stare at it for too long? Gone.

Suddenly, I have floor space! And table space! And shelf space! Shockingly, the room now looks more spacious.

3. Conserve: The most open rooms also tend to be the most conservative in terms of the amount of items they use. Make sure your room has a focal point, and then design around that. In my living room, the focal point is the television and I make sure to keep the attention pointed there. If I want to add wall art, I add one big piece to conserve wall space. If I need storage space, I buy ottomans and tables that double as stowage.

When it comes to making your apartment seem bigger, it’s all about taking up as little room as possible while still satisfying all of your spatial needs. If you can brighten the space while removing unnecessary clutter and establishing focus then your apartment will be looking huge in no time. So forget about those people with their well-endowed apartments. These tips provide natural room enhancement that actually works.

All the love,

Dave
