I know they are overwhelming sometimes, but flea markets often prove to be the absolute BEST sources for truly unique home furnishings and decor.  Some say each piece has history; others say each piece is just old.  No matter what camp you call in, you’ll likely benefit from a few tips the Havenly Design Team has picked up along the way.

From Shelby Girard, Havenly’s Director of Design:

1.     Look for reupholstering opportunities. I like to have a few fabrics in mind (or on hand) to help me imagine an old chair or sofa in a new light.

2.     Bring cash and don’t be afraid to bargain.

3.     Bring a friend. Many times I’ve found myself trying to decide whether a vintage lamp is completely hideous or the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. It helps to have a friend with good taste there to help you determine which side of your brain is right.

4. Think outside of the box. Look for old items that can be used in new unique ways. For example, an old suitcases or trunk as a side table, an antique rug as a wall hanging, old plateware to hold jewelry.

5. Look for pictures frames. It’s easy to pass off a piece of art as not your style but often times it’s worth it if it comes with a beautiful antique frame.
I’m heading out with a friend tomorrow to Antiques Weekend ROUND TOP, TEXAS for what is sure to be the absolute best Texas Treasure Hunt of the season.  I’ll keep Shelby’s tips in mind along with a couple of others I’ve curated from around the web….
Ashley of Design Eur Life (yes, she lives in Europe) suggest you keep this flea market tool kit handy:  Large shopping bag, map of the market, tape measure, pen and paper, packing material, a supreme amount of patience, and a list of the items you truly need/ hope to find.
Brie Dyas of Huffington Post Home urges the shopper to do your research (google before you go!), shop with a discerning eye (watch out for fakes!), and purchase multiple items from the same vendor in order to score a deal (buy more?  twist my arm!).
Last but not least, the lovely Lauren Conrad reminds us that every clever girl knows to do a round BEFORE committing– try to quickly check out all the vendor options before you buy.  And ladies, bargain away but mind your manners– LC says the “rule of thumb is to make an offer 65-75% of the full price.”
I think we’re ready– don’t you?
xx, Alana
