I grew up in a house without a fireplace. Before you get all sad for me, it must be known that my mother found an antique mantel and that we kept in our living room, where traditional fireplaces typically go. The white paint was chipped and the wood that peeked through had an elegant light blue tint. The mantel always had a strong presence, but the holidays were its true time to shine.
