Instagram used to be the unequivocal tastemaker when it came to fashion and interior design trends. But ever since TikTok hit it big in 2019, trend setting (and forecasting) is slowly finding a new home on the video app, giving rise to a new aesthetic and generational point of view that feels incredibly fresh.
Unsurprisingly, TikTok is a veritable treasure trove of interior design inspo, from creative DIYs to trend reporting and beyond. With interior designers, home bloggers, and design lovers sharing their point of view across the app, there’s so much to discover when it comes to designing a home you absolutely love.
Of course, TikTok can feel a bit overwhelming, too — especially if you’re more comfortable on the Instagram platform. So, we decided to scour the app in search of the biggest, most viral interior design trends so you don’t have to. From DIY mania to viral aesthetics, keep scrolling for our official TikTok trend report.
1. DIY Everything
The home decor videos that typically go viral on TikTok have some sort of DIY or budget-saving bent to them. From our very own wifi router cover to DIY wall moulding, shelving, wall art, light fixtures, and peel-and-stick everything, home content on TikTok is all about cutting costs, getting creative, learning new skills, and being your own contractor (for the small projects, at least).

2. Secondhand furniture & decor
Similar to do-it-yourself mania, TikTok tends to favor sustainability at home in the form of secondhand furniture and decor. From antique and thrift stores to estate sales and Facebook Marketplace scores, secondhand shopping for the home is all over the app. Creators like Chelsy Christina have furnished almost their entire home in vintage finds, from sofas to accent tables, documenting the decorating process start to finish. This trend is budget-conscious, creative, and sustainable — a Gen Z trifecta.
@chelsychristina Americans throw out more than 12 million tons of furniture every year. I originally started designing my home with secondhand furniture to avoid contributing to that statistic, but now I’ve fallen in love with the process of sourcing secondhand and designing a home that’s one of a kind. #secondhandhome #secondhandfurniture #sustainablehome #fastfurniture #secondhandhomedecor #thriftedhome #vintagehome
3. Easy aesthetic upgrades
This next trend should come as no surprise considering spots one and two. Once again, this home trend is all about cutting costs, getting creative, and making the most of what you already have at home, whether it’s curating your kitchen utensils for a more neutral color palette, hiding your cords, making your bed in a new way, or switching up your furniture layout for a new look and feel. These easy aesthetic upgrades take five minutes or less and often cost zero dollars — it doesn’t get any better.

4. Playful and colorful
As far as home aesthetics go, playful, whimsical, and colorful is the name of the game on TikTok. While there’s still plenty of neutral design inspo, the overarching look leans more bold and maximalist, like the below home tour from creator Jess Marak. If we had to create a “room recipe” for spaces on TikTok, we’d highlight post-modern, 80s inspired furniture, sculptural lighting, whimsical florals, and bold paint and color palettes.

5. Sculptural accents
From curved sofas and accent chairs to sculptural lighting, scalloped mirrors, disco balls, and asymmetric coffee tables, curvaceous forms of all kinds are incredibly trendy on TikTok. The look is very 1980s-inspired and the polar opposite of ornate, traditional decor (which also has some traction on the app), but it’s incredibly youthful, playful, and personality-packed. Think: less curated, more collected. These spaces don’t take themselves too seriously and put self-expression above all else.
