There’s nothing we love more than a design trend prediction, particularly when it’s seasonal. While we’ve already shared our official list of what’s up-and-coming for fall and winter 2023 (spoiler alert: traditional design is back), we have noticed a specific fall-friendly color popping up in fall previews and look books across the industry: olive green.
This earthy, saturated hue aligns with countless other design trends we’ve seen in the last year or so, including bolder color palettes over all-white-everything, traditional wood tones, and the rising popularity of shades of brown (olive green and brown walnut wood?! A match made in heaven). While this muddled color isn’t for everyone (some may describe it as too retro or earthy), we’re on board for this color trend well into 2024.
We particularly love how olive green adds a verdant pop of color to a space, while still functioning as a saturated neutral and standing firmly in the “earth tones” color camp. It’s the perfect gateway hue to play with if you’re just started to experiment with more color in your home (warm minimalists: we get it).
Ahead, see how our designers are using olive green this season and beyond, from upholstery and wallpaper to decorative accents.
What Colors Go With Olive Green?
As evidenced by the above living room (featuring the olive Ella sofa from Interior Define), cool olive green looks beautiful with warm wood tones, shades of white and ivory, natural textures and colors like jute and rattan, bold black for a hint of edge, soft yellow and ochre, and by extension, brass hardware. We’ve also seen it styled with a hint of dusty coral for an unexpected color pop. Overall, this earth tone looks beautiful paired with other rich earth tones — the finished palette is eye-catching yet understated (not to mention relaxing!).
Adding Olive Green to Your Space
As mentioned, we love olive green in all its varied applications, from sofa and dining chair upholstery to all-over paint.
If you’re ready to go all-in on the timeless color trend, opt for an olive green velvet sofa or dining chair set for a cozy pop of color (bonus: this dark hue is incredibly practical). On the walls, consider a pop of olive green paint in a library, den, basement, half-bathroom, or guest bedroom for a soothing, moody backdrop, or go with an olive green patterned wallpaper for traditional flair.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, consider an olive green accent chair, olive green throw pillows, an olive area rug, or olive green wall art. Experimenting with these easy-to-swap accents is an excellent way to test the waters with this hue without a long-term commitment.
