Because the textile industry has changed so rapidly over the last few years (linen, organic cotton, bamboo, and more have all boomed in popularity), there’s more to sift through than ever before. But as Havenly designer Vivian Torres points out, “towels should always have a mix of softness, weight, and absorbency,” she explains. “That comes down to one thing: GSM, or grams per square meter.”
Before we lose you, this concept is simple: The higher the GSM, the higher the towel quality, weight, and probably the price. “High-quality towels are between 600 and 900 GSM, medium quality are 400 to 600, and rougher, lighter, and less absorbent towels are less than 400,” she adds. “So when purchasing towels for daily use, avoid anything with a GSM under 400.”
