Memorial Day weekend is here, and it’s high time for entertaining outdoors. Nothing’s better than a classic backyard cookout, but we think the tradition could use a little update. Here’s how we plan to create a stylish summer bbq this weekend.

Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Everyone loves the classic bbq staples— burgers, hot dogs, and beer. But, think about kicking those classics up a notch. Pick up brats from a local butcher, spice up your burgers with Jalapenos, and choose fun local beers for your guests to try. Stylish doesn’t mean fancy, but well-considered. So, add a little thought to your typical cookout shopping list.

Cookouts are all about casual good vibes. Keep things playful at your stylish iteration by adding a few funky touches! Bring out your best lawn games, or orchestrate an elaborate scavenger hunt for your guests. Or, include your guests in the cooking process and create a “top chef” competition for best side dish. Whatever it is, be sure to cultivate a fun atmosphere among your friends.

While playful games are always a crowd pleaser, a beautiful table really makes your event stand out. Keep it simple but sophisticated. Use fresh flowers to complement your outdoor space, and provide real plates for your guests. Set the table in advance, too, so you can all eat together, without guests eating on the fly before others get their hands on the food. Serve family style in pretty vessels, and really make the evening feel special!

Make your bbq feel like an event by creating a signature cocktail. It’s such a fun way to make your cookout feel intentional and special! Pick something that’s easy to make, like punch or a margarita, so you can put out a big pitcher for everyone to try.
