There’s something we love so much about a bathroom trend. The limited footprint makes them a great space to experiment with bold color and pattern, from paint and floor tile to countertop material and light fixtures. Like a guest bedroom or an enclosed dining space, primary and half bathrooms are basically begging for a little design flair — even if the rest of your home is neutral.

It appears that Pinterest users agree with this sentiment. According to the social platform’s quarterly home trends report for spring 2024, which notes increases in unique search terms in the last 90 days, moody bathrooms are on the rise this season and beyond.

“Bathrooms are going to have some attitude this season, as Pinterest users search for ways to add dark and moody vibes to their spaces,” reads the report. Pinterest searches for “small moody bathroom,” “moody bathroom decor,” “moody wallpaper bathroom,” and “dark green bathrooms,” increased  by up to 125% during the 90-day period, indicating a marked interest in the bold aesthetic.

How to design a moody bathroom

Fortunately, pulling off a moody bathroom design is easier than you think. If you’re looking for a light DIY you can finish in a single weekend, consider a coat of bold paint, like a charcoal gray, black, dark green, navy, or even rich burgundy. To up the moody factor, we recommend painting the walls, ceilings, trim, and doors the same color for an all-encompassing, saturated affect. For a patterned moment, consider a moody peel-and-stick wallpaper, instead, like this Black Bamboo Garden print or Emerald Tigresse print from The Inside.

If demo is in the cards, consider updating the floor or shower tile with a moody black or evergreen option, or refresh the countertops with a richly-veined black marble slab. Balance out the bold tones with wood accents and hints of warm brass and jute, and you have a space that’s both on-trend and timeless.
