“As a rule of thumb, always look for a bench that’s at least three-quarters the width of the bed,” notes Heather. “It can be smaller or even the same size as the bed, but never larger.” For example, if you have a standard king bed (which measures 80 inches across), look for a bench between 60 and 70 inches for the perfect fit.

As for style, Heather highlights one governing design principle: contrast. “The bench shouldn’t be the exact same style as your bed frame — you want to avoid a matchy-matchy look,” she explains. Instead, think of a crisp white linen duvet against a seagrass bench. “The balanced textures and materials bring the look to life.”
