We love a paint color trend, but a kitchen cabinet paint color trend is particularly intriguing to us as designers. Given the extra time, money, and precision needed to paint kitchen cabinets — whether you DIY or hire it out — this is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when it comes to interior paint.

So, when we came across a new report from Living Spaces on the topic, we were intrigued, to say the least. The brand analyzed new data from Google Trends to unearth the most popular kitchen paint colors state-by-state, and surprisingly, it wasn’t a tried-and-true neutral.

While white came in a close second with 12 total states, Google Trends indicates that blue is the most popular kitchen cabinet color across the U.S. this year, clocking in as the favorite in 13 states.

The timeless hue ranked number-one for kitchen cabinetry in Connecticut, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Beige claimed third place, followed by gray, green, black, and tan claiming the latter four spots.

“Whether dark blue or light blue, some of us are taking chances and spreading our wings by taking things up a notch and experimenting with color,” notes Living Spaces. “We’ve also seen a lot of two-tone kitchens, where the island and the perimeter cabinetry will contrast to keep things fun and interesting.”

If the above Havenly projects are any indication, we’re fully on board with the blue kitchen cabinets trend. The hue adds a little personality and pop of color, while still functioning as a neutral overall.

From soft periwinkle to French blue to bold jewel-toned teal, the finished look feels charming, timeless, and a little cottagecore. The color looks especially beautiful when paired with brass hardware and a little edgy black for a hint of contrast. Need inspiration?
