About Bar & Counter Stools

Counter height vs. bar height: which do I need?

Measure your counter or island. Counter-height stools (24–26-inch seat) suit a standard 36-inch counter; bar-height stools (28–30-inch seat) fit a 40–42-inch raised bar. Leave about 9–13 inches between the seat and the underside of the counter for legroom.

How many stools fit my island?

Allow about 26–30 inches of counter width per stool so people aren’t crowded, and leave a few inches at each end. A typical 6–7-foot island seats three comfortably. Backless stools tuck fully under the overhang and read less bulky when you need to save space.

Backless, low-back, or full-back?

Backless stools slide out of sight and keep sightlines open—best for quick perching and tight kitchens. Low-back and full-back stools (and swivels) add comfort for longer sitting. Swivel seats make it easy to turn toward the conversation or get in and out.

Materials and everyday wear

Kitchens are spill zones—wipeable wood, metal, molded seats, and performance or faux-leather upholstery hold up best. Look for floor-friendly feet and, for homes with kids, rounded edges and a stable, weighted base.

Bar & Counter Stools FAQs

How do I know if I need counter or bar stools?

Measure the surface: ~36-inch counters take counter-height stools (24–26-inch seat); ~42-inch bars take bar-height stools (28–30-inch seat).

How many stools fit at my island?

Plan about 26–30 inches of width per stool; a 6–7-foot island typically seats three with room to spare.

How much legroom should there be under the counter?

Aim for 9–13 inches between the seat top and the underside of the counter so knees fit comfortably.

Are backless stools or stools with backs better?

Backless save space and keep a kitchen open; backs and swivels add comfort for longer sitting. Choose by how much you’ll linger.

Can a Havenly designer help me choose stools?
