8 Designer Secrets For Making Wall-to-Wall Carpet Feel Cozy and Chic

1. Stay Neutral
If you’re the one picking your wall-to-wall carpet, go for a neutral color, which makes it easy to bring in accent patterns or colors that don’t compete with it for attention. Even in a mostly neutral space like this, a simple beige carpet blends in to create a calm interior.
2. Try a Subtle Pattern
Not all patterned carpets are loud and statement-making—this cream-colored option has a very subtle crosshatched design that makes it just a little bit more detailed than a simpler carpet. “It makes the carpeting feel purposefully selected and adds that bit of dimension while still keeping the coziness we love carpeting for,” Fischer says. No accent rug necessary!
3. Go For a Low Pile
For a space that feels contemporary and elevated, opt for a low-pile carpet. “It has clean lines against baseboards, and still allows for easy rug layering,” suggests Fischer. Unwanted wall-to-wall carpeting can be a frustrating design element, especially if you’re not able to remove it. But it doesn’t have to totally derail the feel of your space. In these instances, go for an extra-large area rug that can completely change the vibe of the interior. “You can remedy staining, discoloration or play down a color you don’t necessarily like with a well chosen rug,” Fischer says.
6. Create a Visual Distraction
When your goal is to distract from wall-to-wall carpeting you just don’t love, a larger area rug can be helpful, but medium-size options are great too—especially if they’re in a vibrant color or pattern. “Choose bold artwork, or a funky chandelier to keep the eye moving and not focused on your carpeting,” Fischer explains.
7. Stick to a Tight Color Palette
“By working with the color palette of your existing carpet, you can create a really purposeful and cohesive look,” Fischer says. That doesn’t mean going totally monochrome (unless that’s what you want!). Instead, look for the small details in your carpet; for instance, if there are flecks of chocolate brown, add some darker brown accents to your room, like in this space.
8. Layer It Up!
Even if you’re happy with your wall-to-wall carpet, don’t underestimate the impact of an area rug layered on top of it.
