Space
When picking out the perfect dining set, take in the dimensions of the room or nook it’ll be in. Make sure there is enough space between the table and the wall to pull chairs out comfortably, or skirt behind when someone is seated (no one wants to crawl over their dining neighbors lap). A general rule of thumb is to ensure a perimeter of at least 30 inches between the pushed in chairs and any other walls or pieces of furniture in the area.
Visual Interest
To keep your space from feeling too vanilla, create some contrast. Think leather chairs with a rustic wooden table or velvet seats tucked beneath a marble top; a round table over a hide rug or a rectangular one alongside a linear chandelier. A juxtaposition of textures, shapes, materials, and colors makes for a room that feels more dynamic and effortlessly styled.
Lifestyle
Consider your use of the space when selecting your furniture—the last thing you want is a dining scene that always has you on edge. Keep in mind too a kitchen table typically gets more use, and wear and tear, than a formal dining room set-up. While you might be the epitome of etiquette, account for the occasional kiddo knocking over their plate or a guest spilling their wine.
Think through what type of materials are most conducive to your particular lifestyle and household. For example, marble tabletops are more porous (meaning: more likely to stain) but a lot of brands will treat them with a sealant—so be sure to double check. Wood and leather chairs are easier to wipe down, making them more durable when spills occur. And of course, a rustic farmhouse table can more easily conceal bumps and scratches.
