They say the kitchen is the heart of the home (because let’s face it, we all prefer to be within striking distance of the fridge). It stands to reason then that your dining scene is a foundational element of any home — whether a formal setting with seating for twelve, or a small scale bistro nook tucked into a cozy corner.

But never has the table seen more action than in 2020, when they doubled as offices, home schools, and restaurants with your choice of take-out (we always vote pizza). With the dining set up playing such a crucial role, we thought it high time to share our designer tips for selecting the best piece for your space.

Here are a few factors to consider before you shop.

Space

When picking out the perfect dining set, take in the dimensions of the room or nook it’ll be in. Make sure there is enough space between the table and the wall to pull chairs out comfortably, or skirt behind when someone is seated (no one wants to crawl over their dining neighbors lap). A general rule of thumb is to ensure a perimeter of at least 30 inches between the pushed in chairs and any other walls or pieces of furniture in the area.

Visual Interest

To keep your space from feeling too vanilla, create some contrast. Think leather chairs with a rustic wooden table or velvet seats tucked beneath a marble top; a round table over a hide rug or a rectangular one alongside a linear chandelier. A juxtaposition of textures, shapes, materials, and colors makes for a room that feels more dynamic and effortlessly styled.

Lifestyle

Consider your use of the space when selecting your furniture—the last thing you want is a dining scene that always has you on edge. Keep in mind too a kitchen table typically gets more use, and wear and tear, than a formal dining room set-up. While you might be the epitome of etiquette, account for the occasional kiddo knocking over their plate or a guest spilling their wine.

Think through what type of materials are most conducive to your particular lifestyle and household. For example, marble tabletops are more porous (meaning: more likely to stain) but a lot of brands will treat them with a sealant—so be sure to double check. Wood and leather chairs are easier to wipe down, making them more durable when spills occur. And of course, a rustic farmhouse table can more easily conceal bumps and scratches.

With that in mind, it’s time for some inspiration. Our designers rounded up a variety of our favorite chair and table combinations to suit every space — and every style. Whether you’re into the warm and natural aesthetic, or never met a luxe look you didn’t immediately love, we’ve got a combo for you. Fill your mug (or wine glass if it’s the happiest of hours), pull up a seat, and shop on.

Small Spaces

There’s only one rule when it comes to a small scale dining solution: there’s no need to sacrifice style for space. We promise. Check out these curated bistro sets that pack all the chicness and character without excessive square footage.

Round Dining

If you have a more evenly proportioned room, round dining tables can help to maximize space – allowing for easy movement around the edges, as well as the ability to pull up an extra seat. We also love how they serve as a conduit for connection and conversation, keeping the whole family or gathering engaged together. Our designers hand selected their winning round combos.

Long Dining

Rectangular tables are often the more traditional choice, as seen in many formal dining rooms. But don’t confuse tradition with a dated look. Whatever your style, there are countless options that pack modern flair and visual intrigue for a richly nuanced aesthetic. Just take a look.
