When Scandal star Katie Lowes and her husband, actor Adam Shapiro, welcomed their son Albee in 2017, his nursery was a California kid’s nautical-themed dream. At the time, Katie envisioned creating a sustainable, calming environment for her new little boy in this Oeuf-furnished space.

Fast forward to November 2020. Albee became a big brother and Katie and Adam welcomed their second child, daughter Vera (let’s just pause for a moment to say how much we adore both kiddos names!).

Because she’d fallen in love with the nursery they’d designed for Albee, she wasn’t about to just toss it all. She enlisted the help of Havenly designer Kelsey Fischer to keep the most beloved elements, while refreshing the room to make it perfect for little Vera.

The Peaceful Pod

While technically the jumbo-sized whales swimming along one wall could be called a statement feature, there’s something inherently soothing about their undulating shapes in soft blue and white. “The whales were Albee’s,” says Katie. “We just love, love, love them.” Having watched over baby Albee, the whales were here to stay once Vera came along.

Sweet and Serene

While the original iteration of the room featured the classic blue-and-white combo welcoming a baby boy, with baby girl came a just-slightly-feminine infusion of soft pink tones to complement the existing palette.

Katie had a clear goal for her babies’ nursery to be a calm, peaceful space—and thanks to this color scheme, you can feel it. No temper tantrums here (wishful thinking?).

A Thoughtful Refresh

Katie swapped Albee’s navy-and-white stripes for a soft, subtly patterned baby blue and pink rug and his graphic crib sheets for a paler print. One of her favorite pieces is Vera’s new Kathy Kuo crib, which adds a traditional twist in the otherwise casual, boho baby room. Mom can also put her feet up on the Restoration Hardware pouf that pairs with the comfy slipcovered chair for late-night feedings and snuggle sessions.

Soft, subtle patterns on crib sheets and a plush rug underfoot also offer just enough of a refresh to change the character of the space for this new little human.

At the end of the day—literally—Katie’s biggest desire for her daughter’s space is one every parent shares. “We wish and hope our daughter sleeps soundly and peacefully in her new nursery.” she says. (All of our Havenly mamas echo that!)
