If we had to select one design style that defined the last five or so years, it would be Organic Modern. Popularized by designers like Shea McGee and Amber Lewis, this aesthetic is lived in, down to earth, and a little vintage-inspired, making it the perfect antidote to the cool, white-walled minimalism that reigned before it. Organic modern felt colorful, personality-packed, and charming when it first came on the scene, and like so many other designers, we embraced the look with open arms.
But now, as this look reaches a fever pitch of popularity across social media and the design world at large, we can’t help but look ahead to what’s next. And spoiler alert: It’s good news for fans of more maximalist design. Our design team predicts that the Modern Eclectic aesthetic is poised to take over Organic Modern everything in the next year and beyond.
“In a world that once embraced strictly serene neutrals, sleek lines, and minimalist vibes, Modern Eclectic is the bold, unapologetic antidote,” says Havenly Director of Design & Content Heather Goerzen. “This style isn’t about restraint—it’s about letting your personality and passions speak through every piece, layer, and hue.”

What is Modern Eclectic interior design?
Think of Modern Eclectic design as a happy medium between all-out maximalism and cool minimalism — it’s colorful, but restrained. There’s a bold pattern drawing the eye in, but only one. It’s eclectic, but still edited and pared back. The decorative objects are unique and maybe even genuine vintage, but there are only two or three on display.
Simply put, this design style makes an impact and dares to go bold, but practices restraint and embraces the “less is more” philosophy, too. It’s just as thoughtful as it is maximal. Designers popularizing this style love a fun sculptural vase or one-of-a-kind curved chair, but embrace mid-century modern classics and clean, modern pieces too.
How to embrace Modern Eclectic design at home
1. Add bold color and pattern (but not too much!)
A key tenant of this design style? Embracing a bold color or pattern, even if it’s just one or two per room. Whether it’s all-over paint, eye-catching wallpaper, a statement headboard, or a combination of the three, don’t be afraid to go bold when choosing the basic elements of your room design. From there, you can balance out the bold moments with more minimal, neutral elements.
2. Mix different design styles
As always, the magic is in the mix. Create contrast and visual interest by pairing two seemingly dissimilar design styles in a single space. In the above living room, the ornate gold mirror and vintage chandelier stand out even more when paired with the ultra-modern coffee table and minimal accent chairs. Modern Eclectic design thrives on that slightly unexpected, dynamic twist.
3. Let your personality & interests lead
Modern Eclectic design embraces more personality-driven styling, and less design-by-recipe. When adding decorative touches to your space, style with soul and embrace your interests, experiences, and individuality rather than following a strict design formula. This approach will create a space that’s layered, unique, and full of meaning, rather than simply feeling like a showroom or picture-perfect fodder for Instagram.
4. Hit the thrift store
We know — thrifting furniture and decor can be so hit or miss, and it’s hard to design a home around pieces you may or may not find. But, we do think it’s important to prioritize more unique items — whether you’re hunting for something specific or already have a few hand-me-downs — when pulling off the Modern Eclectic look. From thrifted art to vases sourced on Etsy, vintage pieces bring warmth and charm and ground a space in nostalgia and personality.
5. Focus on vibrancy over quiet harmony
Contrary to popular belief, a bold, pattern-driven space can still feel calm and relaxing. Rooms that are too “harmonious” can sometimes lack depth or personality — like they’ve been curated to blend in rather than stand out. Let your furniture and decor compete for attention and have a conversation — picture a vintage Persian rug paired with a sleek mid-century chair or a maximalist print against a neutral backdrop.
