Like countless other design lovers, we often look to Pinterest for design inspiration. From design aesthetic to room inspo to specific products, the social platform is a well-known treasure trove of home ideas (note the hundreds of thousands of “dream home” Pinterest boards).
So when Pinterest HQ releases a trend report, we pay attention. Most recently, the social platform released quarterly home trend predictions specifically for spring 2024 and beyond, noting increases in unique search terms in the last 90 days.
The report ultimately named “organic modern style” with touches of brutalism as the trending home aesthetic of the season. The search term increased by 157% in the past 90 days, followed by “stained concrete floors living room” (up 60%), “wood and concrete” (up 45%), and “brutalist interior” (up 25%), nodding at hints of cool brutalist influence.
“Pinterest users are embracing brutalist interior design this spring by incorporating more organic and industrial materials into their home’s look,” reads the report, which dubbed the trend “harsh harmony.”
As lovers of the organic modern design aesthetic, we’re very much on board with this so-called “organic brutalism” for spring 2024 and beyond. While harsh brutalism can be a bit polarizing, we think it adds a welcome edge to the popular organic modern design style.
Plus, both design styles share a flair for earthy color palettes and natural elements, including marble, travertine, raw wood, concrete, limewash, and more. This new “organic brutalism” look offers the best of both worlds: warm, texture, and softness with edge, simplicity, and modernism.
How to Bring “Organic Brutalism” Home
To nail trendy “organic brutalism” aesthetic in your home, it’s all about the mix. Focus on the following design elements to bring the look home:
- Embrace a warm, earthy color palette of ochre, olive green, rich browns, and touches of dusty pink.
- Play with natural textures like wood, concrete, travertine, marble, limewash, granite, chrome, cotton, and linen.
- Let a concrete element shine, like flooring, countertops, or even a simple coffee or side table.
- Pair vintage furniture and decor with more modern pieces for a mismatched look.
- Have at least one raw, reclaimed wood piece, whether it be a console table, stool, side table, or dining table.
- Mix rounded, soft silhouettes with harsh, clean lines (both in furniture and decor)
- Play with hints of warm gray (yes, we said it).
- Warm up the look with fresh florals and foraged branches.
- Add in sculptural lighting (including mid-century modern lanterns) for an eye-catching touch.
