How to layer a bed

Start with a fitted and flat sheet, add a duvet or comforter, then fold a quilt or coverlet at the foot for texture. Top with sleeping pillows, larger Euro shams behind them, and a couple of decorative pillows. Mixing weaves—crisp percale, soft sateen, relaxed linen—adds depth.

Choosing sheets: material and weave

Percale cotton is crisp and cool; sateen is silky and warm; linen is breathable, textured, and gets softer with washing. Thread count matters less than fiber quality and weave—look for long-staple cotton or pure linen over a high number alone.

Towels and bath basics

For towels, look for absorbent, quick-drying cotton (Turkish and combed cotton are favorites). Buy a cohesive set—bath, hand, and washcloths—in a palette that complements your tile and fixtures, and add a bath mat for comfort and a finished look.
