About Beds & Headboards

What size bed is right for your room?

Leave at least 24–30 inches of walking space on each side of the bed and at the foot so the room feels easy to move through. A queen (60×80) suits most bedrooms and couples; a king (76×80) wants a room at least 12×12 feet to breathe. In a smaller room, a platform bed with a low profile and no footboard keeps sightlines open and the space feeling larger.

Bed styles: platform, upholstered & storage

Platform beds are low, modern, and often skip the box spring. Upholstered beds and headboards add softness and a built-in backrest for reading in bed. Storage beds with drawers or a lift-up base reclaim space in tight rooms. Cane, wood, and metal frames each set a different tone—warm and organic, clean and architectural, or airy and light.

Headboard only, or a full frame?

A standalone headboard mounts to the wall or attaches to an existing metal frame—an easy refresh if you already have a foundation you like. A full bed frame gives a finished, furniture-grade look on all sides. If your bed floats in the room rather than against a wall, a frame with a finished footboard reads better from every angle.

How to style a bed

Layer from back to front: sleeping pillows, then larger Euro shams, then a couple of decorative pillows and a folded throw at the foot. Mix textures—linen, cotton, a chunky knit—and keep the palette calm for rest. Flank the bed with matching nightstands and lamps for a collected, hotel-like symmetry.

Beds & Headboards FAQs

How much space should I leave around a bed?

Aim for 24–30 inches on each open side and at the foot, so you can walk past and make the bed comfortably.

Do upholstered headboards need special care?

Vacuum them occasionally and spot-clean spills; performance or removable-cover fabrics make upkeep easier in busy bedrooms.

What's the difference between a platform bed and a standard frame?

A platform bed has built-in slats or a solid base that supports the mattress directly—usually no box spring needed—and sits lower than a traditional frame.

Can I use a headboard without a frame?

Yes—wall-mounted headboards, or ones that bolt onto an existing metal bed frame, are a simple way to upgrade the look without replacing your foundation.

Can a Havenly designer help me choose a bed?

Yes—take our style quiz or book a designer, and we'll recommend pieces sized to your room, your routine, and your style.
