Light Fixtures

Overhead lighting sets the mood and the function of a room—from a statement chandelier to a row of pendants over the island. Shop designer-curated light fixtures: chandeliers, pendants, flush mounts, and more.

About Light Fixtures

What size fixture does my room need?

A quick designer formula: add your room's length and width in feet, and that sum in inches is a good fixture diameter. For a 12×14 room, look for a fixture around 26 inches wide. Over a dining table, the fixture should be about half to two-thirds the table's width and hang centered.

How high to hang a fixture

With 8-foot ceilings, the bottom of a fixture should clear about 7 feet of floor in walkways. Over a dining table or island, hang it 30–36 inches above the surface. Add roughly 3 inches of height for every foot of ceiling above 8 feet.

Fixture types: chandelier, pendant & flush mount

Flush and semi-flush mounts suit low ceilings and hallways. Pendants define zones—singly over a nook or in a row over an island. Chandeliers make a statement over a dining table or entry. Choose a finish that ties to your other metals, and a scale that's a touch bigger than feels safe.

Layering with bulbs and dimmers

Overhead light is just one layer—pair it with table and floor lamps for warmth and task light. Put fixtures on dimmers to shift a room from bright and functional to soft and intimate, and choose warm bulbs (2700–3000K) in living spaces for a flattering, cozy glow.

Light Fixtures FAQs

What size light fixture do I need?

Add the room's length + width in feet; that number in inches is a good fixture diameter. Over a table, aim for half to two-thirds the table's width.

How high should I hang a dining room fixture?

About 30–36 inches above the tabletop, centered over the table, so it lights the surface without blocking sightlines.

What's the difference between a flush mount and a pendant?

Flush mounts sit tight to the ceiling (great for low ceilings and halls); pendants hang down to define a zone like an island or nook.

What bulb color should I use?

Warm white (2700–3000K) flatters living spaces; pair fixtures with dimmers to shift between bright and cozy.
