About Rugs

What size rug do I need?

Bigger is almost always better—an undersized rug makes a room feel smaller. In a living room, choose a rug large enough that at least the front legs of every seat rest on it (all four legs is even better). Under a dining table, add about 24 inches beyond the table on all sides so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. In a bedroom, a large rug under the bed with 18–24 inches showing on the sides and foot feels luxe.

Rug sizes by room

Living rooms usually want an 8×10 or 9×12; a 5×8 works only in small spaces or layered over a larger rug. Dining rooms typically need an 8×10 or 9×12 depending on table size. Bedrooms do well with an 8×10 under a queen or a 9×12 under a king. Runners (2.5×8+) suit hallways and kitchens. When you’re between sizes, size up.

Materials: wool, synthetic & natural fiber

Wool is the gold standard—soft, durable, and naturally stain-resistant. Synthetics (polypropylene) are budget-friendly, washable, and great for high-traffic spots. Natural fibers like jute and sisal add organic texture but feel coarser underfoot. Cotton and washable rugs suit kitchens, kids' rooms, and easy cleanup.

How to place and care for a rug

Anchor the rug to the seating, not the walls—furniture should sit on or just over its edge. Use a rug pad to prevent slipping, protect floors, and add cushion. Vacuum regularly, rotate the rug a couple times a year for even wear, and blot spills promptly. High-pile rugs benefit from a pad and the occasional professional cleaning.

All Rugs FAQs

What size rug do I need for my living room?

Most living rooms need an 8×10 or 9×12 so at least the front legs of every seat rest on the rug. When in doubt, size up—an undersized rug shrinks the room.

What size rug goes under a dining table?

Choose a rug that extends about 24 inches beyond the table on all sides, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out—usually an 8×10 or 9×12.

What's the most durable rug material?

Wool is durable, soft, and naturally stain-resistant; polypropylene (synthetic) is budget-friendly and washable for high-traffic spaces.

Do I need a rug pad?

Yes—a pad prevents slipping, protects your floors, adds cushion, and helps the rug wear evenly. It's worth it on any surface.

Can a Havenly designer help me choose a rug?

Yes—take our style quiz or book a designer, and we'll help you choose a rug sized and styled to your room.
