We’d like to start this article off with a disclaimer: we love the bouclé furniture trend. So many of our design team members have this texture-rich, perfectly retro material in their homes right now, and we’ve collectively enjoyed every second of its 21st century renaissance.

But because bouclé has officially hit the mainstream (you can find it and its faux counterpart at retailers ranging from Target to Lulu & Georgia), it’s only a matter of time before the look moves from “trending” to “everywhere.” While we’ll definitely be holding out to our beloved bouclé pieces for years to come, trend cycle be damned, we’re admittedly intrigued about what’s next

Ahead, read five Havenly designers’ thoughts on what will reign supreme after the bouclé craze, and get ahead of the trend cycle with a few of our favorite pieces.

Bold Pattern & Texture

Designer Insight: Brady Burke

“From Mark Sikes to Amber Lewis and The Inside, I’m starting to notice a more maximalist approach to upholstery overall. Rather than one fabric style or print being the next ‘it look,’ I think we’ll see an uptick in pattern play, mixed textures like linen and velvet, and ornate details, like pleating, tufting, and piping. This falls in line with the return of traditional design as a whole.”

Earthy Velvets

Designer Insight: Heather Goerzen

“It’s certainly not velvet’s first time riding the trend wave, but I’ve noticed a refreshing departure away from the standard velvet jewel tones like evergreen, sapphire, ruby red, and citrine. Seventies-inspired, earthy velvets like sage, ochre, camel, burnt orange, brick red, and mink are slowly but surely popping up everywhere. The look feels organic and retro, as opposed to glam and mid-century modern.”

Cozy Blazer Fabrics

Designer Insight: Toussaint Derby

“Picture a moody wood-paneled library, and a bottle green, leather-tufted accent chair with a tweed blazer with leather elbow patches draped over the arm. That’s what I see as the next big upholstery trend. Think tweeds and glen plaids, herringbone patterns, and shades of beige, deep brown, olive, gray, and tan. It’s the type of fabric that makes you want to poor a whiskey and read Chaucer.”

Classic Stripes

Designer Insight: Kasee Smith

I think stripes are going to be the next big thing in upholstery, particularly on accent chairs. Whether you go with a tight ticking stripe or a more intricate Austin stripe, the look is undeniably classic. I love it paired with modern touches, like a marble coffee table or sleek curved sofa, for a touch of interesting juxtaposition.”

Foliage Prints

Designer Insight: Shelby Girard

“I’ve been spotting verdure foliage prints everywhere lately! From classic iterations via Old World Weavers and Scalamandre to contemporary takes from The Inside, this earthy green print is definitely on the up-and-up.”
