If the brown decor trend and the current gray revival are any indication, fashion trends tend to trickle down into the world of interior design. And where do these trends tend to take shape and gain traction? None other than Pinterest (and the runways, of course).
Enter the 2025 Pinterest Predicts report. In addition to the Mix and Maximalist trend, the social platform has named the “Fisherman Aesthetic” as one of the biggest trends to watch this year and beyond.
People are embracing a “laid back maritime attitude and bring a sea la vie take to everything—even if the ocean is nowhere in sight,” reads the report. “Get ready for cable knit sweaters, sardine tattoos and stripes. on. everything.” The social platform cites significant spikes in key search terms like “cable knit sweater,” “raincoat outfit,” and “fisherman sandals” as evidence for the rising interest in the coastal-inspired look.
While Pinterest explores the fisherman aesthetic through the lens of fashion (think brown leather loafers, chore jackets, bucket hats, quilted vests, and corduroy), this trend is already being interpreted for the home (think striped upholstery, warm wood furniture, and shades of navy, dark gray, and seaside green).
All about the Fisherman Aesthetic

When it comes to the home, think of the fisherman aesthetic as J.Crew and Ralph Lauren meets cottagecore. It’s classic preppy, but a bit more moody and whimsical — swap out the pastels and word art signs emblematic of classic coastal design, and embrace darker, stormy tones, warm walnut furniture, and framed vintage maps as artwork. It’s very New England meets Ireland, and it’s very on-trend in 2025.
Bringing the Fisherman Aesthetic home
The Fisherman Aesthetic has a few defining characteristics that give it its rustic-coastal charm. If you’re looking to introduce this trending design style into your home, focus on the following design elements:
- Moody grays, navy blues, dusty teals, warm whites, and hints of red
- Worn walnut furniture
- Vintage accessories and artwork, particularly painted seascapes
- Classic striped upholstery and wallpaper
- Shiplap and rustic wall moulding
- Natural materials like rope, rattan, and wicker
- Nautical touches, like model ships and glass bottles
Of course, the magic is in the mix. Picture a worn walnut piece of furniture with a tailored upholstered ottoman in a classic striped fabric — the juxtaposition is what makes it visually interesting and totally unique.
