Of all the things we look forward to at the end of each year, Pinterest’s annual trend report surprisingly ranks toward the top of the list. As interior designers and avid Pinterest users ourselves, we can’t help but be intrigued by what’s to come on the discovery platform, from home decor and architecture to beauty, fashion, and food.
And this year, we’re particularly intrigued by the new kitchen trend on the design scene: eclectic and retro cookspaces. Brimming with vintage pieces, decorative knick-knacks, and bold pops of paint, the kitchen aesthetic is leaning decidedly more charming English countryside than cool, clean, and modern.
“This year, Gen X and Boomers will quirk up their cooking areas with thrifted finds, vintage appliances, and eye- jarring pops of paint,” reads the report. “No minimalist aesthetic is safe.” The social platform notes a marked increase in search terms like “eclectic kitchen decor,” “kitschy kitchen,” “eccentric kitchen,” and “retro pink kitchen” as evidence for the growing trend in the new year.
While the look is a touch retro and therefore a bit controversial, we can’t help but love the refreshing departure from crisp, all-white kitchens and carrara marble everything. We’re not necessarily rushing to paint our kitchens pistachio green, but we can appreciate the use of vintage pieces, collected knick-knacks, and mis-matched dinnerware to create a more lived-in, old-world European feel.
What’s more, this look definitely falls in line with the slew of other 2024 design trends that celebrate all things traditional, vintage-inspired, colorful, and a little maximalist. If anything, this kitchen trend is just further confirmation that all-minimalist-everything is past its prime, even in traditionally utilitarian cookspaces. Bring on the color, pattern, and whimsy this year!
