There is a reason that, as designers, we ask you who uses the space. Kids play a huge factor in how we design a room from the pieces we choose to the way we set up a room. Read on for how we think about designing rooms around kids.
Fabric Selection
Sticky hands, spilled juice and crumbs all play a factor in which fabrics we choose. The good news is that there are so many new types of fabrics that help repel stains. See below for some of our favorites!
Pottery Barn + Crypton
This fabric has been engineered with Crypton® Home’s superior performance technology for easy cleanup. Spills are easily cleaned with a dry towel. If it does stain, it can easily be lifted with a laundry detergent solution and some warm water.
Sunbrella
Originally created for outdoor use, Sunbrella fabrics are making an appearance indoors. They are fade & stain resistant. Cleanup is easy with just soap and water. Many of our partners like Ballard and Pottery Barn have Sunbrella fabrics to choose from!
Other Performance Fabrics
Look for the word ‘Performance’ when choosing a fabric. This means that the fabric is much more durable and will hold up well to little feet and toys!
Rugs
Just like fabrics, it’s important to choose the right type of rug. It’s on the ground and will likely take the most wear and tear – and catch the majority of spills! See below for things to look for and things to avoid.
Polypropylene & Polyester
Both of these fabrics were also made for outdoor use, so they can handle dirt, rain, pets, you name it!
Pile Height
Imagine a piece of candy or even crumbs falling into a shag carpet! By the time you found it, it would be completely wrapped up in the rug’s long fibers. We recommend choosing rugs that have a lower pile.
