Summer is finally upon us and that means more opportunities to impress your friends with outdoor soirées and backyard cookouts. But where should you start designing an outdoor patio? Your indoor sanctuary can be intimidating enough to tackle, not to mention creating the perfect outdoor space.

That’s why we asked Havenly designer, Kelly Almus, to walk us through her summer patio design process for inspiration. Kelly’s client recently moved into a new townhouse and wanted a cozy outdoor space to relax and entertain. Kelly sourced Scandinavian and Boho pieces in a neutral color palette to open up the small patio.

Here’s her process.

This contemporary daybed is extremely functional—it can be converted from a comfortable daybed to a sofa (enter nap time). It’s also perfect for entertaining a larger group of people or for those low key evenings hanging on the patio with a glass of wine.

Outdoor rugs add a cozy element to an outdoor space, which ties the design together. Kelly’s client was drawn to high contrasted scandinavian prints—so this rug was a perfect fit.

This accent table adds so much function to the space. Kelly’s client has a small patio, so the more movable small pieces like this, the better. This table can be used in a group for a larger coffee table or can be separated and used as smaller accent tables next to the seating. It provides the best of both worlds.

The woven and wood look of this accent chair speaks to the Scandinavian and Boho style Kelly was creating for this patio. The mix of materials are visually interesting and the open frame gives the piece a lighter feel—perfect for a small space.

The more plants the better. This client loved plants and wanted to accent her space with as many as she could outside. Adding these simple and clean lined planter pots enhance the vibe we were going for.
