We Designed a Reading Room for Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club (Yes, We’ve Peaked)

To say that this project was a bit of designer’s dream is an understatement. Not only did we have the honor of designing a space for Reese Witherspoon and her team of fellow book lovers (pinch us, please!) at the Reese’s Book Club office, it was for a very special space that we love so much ourselves: the Reading Room.

“Books have always held a special place in my heart,” says Reese Witherspoon about the exclusive collaboration. “I’m so thrilled to have teamed up with Havenly to make even more space for book joy (and throw pillows).”

Armed with a vision and our new product line of reading essentials, our very own VP of Creative and Design Shelby Girard set out to create a cozy, colorful, and inviting space at Reese’s Book Club office and Hello Sunshine HQ. Brimming with plush seating, cozy pillows, and countless well-loved books on Reese’s list, the finished space plays host to book club gatherings, solo reading sessions, and beyond.

Of course, we also had a little help from our new Havenly x Reese’s Book Club collection — the space includes our cozy, sink-into-me Elle Chair, bright and playful Lemon Wallpaper, vintage-inspired Task Lamp, and the Fringe Pillow and Classic Throw in comforting rose and blush tones.

Read on to learn the “why” behind each of our design decisions, plus how do create the perfectly cheerful Reading Room in your home.

High-Energy Prints

Playing off the existing office aesthetic and Reese’s bubbly personality, Shelby started with a sunny citrus wallpaper from our new line. “Reading is all about joy, so feel free to go a bit bold and colorful in your personal reading space to create a more inviting atmosphere,” she suggests. Pro tip: if you aren’t quite ready to go allin on wallpaper, get a massive picture frame and frame your favorite pattern! It’s impactful, cost-effective, and super easy to change out whenever you’d like.

Stylish & Functional Furniture

A great reading room begins with the cozy lounge chair and hardworking side table (where else are you supposed to stash your three to five beverages?!). “Our Elle chair is gorgeous and incredibly comfortable,” adds Shelby. “Plus, it comes in seven different fabrics to suit your unique style.” True to form, Reese’s Book Club office is brimming with plenty of throw pillows and blankets for soft pops of complementary colors and added coziness.

Putting the Lit in Literature

“We always aim to incorporate three to five light sources in any given room, but that’s especially crucial in a reading room,” notes Shelby. Here, we went with two wall sconces and our new task lamp, in addition to overhead lighting, to power reading sessions before and after office hours. Ambiance is key!

Shelfie Goals

No reading room is complete without a well-stocked bookshelf, both for aesthetics and functionality. “We wanted a layered, lived-in look with colorful spines on display,” adds Shelby. “A few artful vases and decorative plants round out the eclectic aesthetic.” Of course, the shelves are brimming with Reese’s Book Club selects, including the latest title, The Dictionary of Lost Wordsby Pip Williams.
