If you sit for hours, prioritize support: a seat height that lets your feet rest flat with knees at about 90°, lumbar support for your lower back, and a seat depth that leaves a couple inches behind your knees. Adjustability—height, tilt, arms—lets one chair fit different people and tasks.
A task chair with adjustable lumbar, tilt, and arms is the workhorse for long days. A swivel or upholstered statement chair looks at home in a bedroom or living-room workspace where it’s seen more than it’s sat in for eight hours. Decide by how many hours a day you’ll really be in it.
Mesh backs breathe and suit warm rooms; upholstered and leather seats feel more furniture-like. Check the casters match your floor—hard casters for carpet, soft/rubber for wood and tile (or add a mat). A weighted, five-point base is the most stable.
Pair a ~29–30-inch desk with a chair whose seat adjusts around 17–19 inches, so your forearms rest level with the desktop and your feet stay flat (a footrest helps if not). Leave room for the chair to roll back, and choose arms that tuck under the desk if space is tight.

For a ~29–30-inch desk, a seat that adjusts to about 17–19 inches lets your forearms rest level with the top and your feet stay flat.
Mesh breathes and suits long workdays in warm rooms; upholstered or leather looks more like furniture for chairs that double as decor. Pick by use and setting.
Soft, rubberized casters (or a chair mat) protect wood and tile; hard casters are meant for carpet.
