Four Hands
A table lamp is equal parts function and finishing touch—casting a warm pool of light and adding height, color, and polish to a surface. Shop designer-curated table lamps for the nightstand, console, and side table.

Scale the lamp to its surface and neighbors. On a nightstand or side table, the bottom of the shade should sit around eye level when you're seated—often a lamp 24–30 inches tall. A good rule: the lamp should be no more than about 1.5 times the height of the table it sits on.
Flank a bed or sofa with a matching pair for symmetry and even light. Add one to a console, a desk, or a bookshelf to layer light at a lower level. A pair of lamps is one of the fastest ways to make a room feel finished and hotel-like.
A shade diffuses light and sets the tone—linen and fabric for soft, warm light; metal or opaque for a focused downward glow. Use warm bulbs (2700K) for a cozy feel, and put lamps on the same dimmer or smart plug so you can soften a whole room at once.
Treat the lamp as the tall anchor in a vignette: pair it with a stack of books, a small object, or a tray so it doesn't stand alone. On a nightstand, leave room for a glass of water and your phone; on a console, balance a lamp at one end with art or an object at the other.

A matching pair reads tailored and gives even light, but coordinated (not identical) lamps work too—keep the heights close for balance.
No more than about 1.5 times the table's height, and scaled so the shade doesn't overwhelm the surface.
Warm white (2700K) for a cozy glow; add a dimmer or smart bulb to adjust the mood.
