Interior designers have a magical touch when it comes to styling pretty much anything: bookshelves, coffee tables, throw pillows and blankets… the list goes on. But there’s something particularly intriguing about watching an interior designer make a bed — how do they get the duvet so fluffy? Do they literally iron the sheets to get them that smooth? Why does it always look ten times better than my bed, no matter how hard I try?

For answers to these burning questions (and more), we tapped three Havenly designers to share their personal “bed recipe,” so to speak. From layered and luxe to minimalist and pared-back, each designer brings a distinct bedscape to the table. Keep scrolling to learn exactly how to make a bed like a hotel, and peep the designer home videos for detailed, step-by-step instructions.

How to Make a Bed: Moody Classic by Brady Burke

Havenly lead designer Brady Burke’s Denver Victorian is chic, moody-classic perfection, and his guest bedroom is no exception. With bold black paint, modern accessories, and a statement floral bed from The Inside, the look is dynamic, inviting, and a touch playful. He embraces a very boutique hotel-esque bedscape – from the nine layered pillows to the tucked-in bedding (to show off the floral frame, of course). We’d gladly crash here.

Brady’s Bed Recipe:

  • Neutral comforter, tucked in
  • Four horizontal sleeping pillows
  • Three vertical 22-inch throw pillows
  • Two smaller lumbar pillows in front
  • Folded coverlet at the foot of the bed, tucked in

Shelby’s look is classic, warm, and a touch edgy, from the neutral linen bedding to the high-contrast table lamps, artwork, and curtain hardware. The sand-hued throw blanket and lumbar pillows add visual interest to the crisp, all-white bedding, and the styling is simple and fuss-free for that effortlessly Parisian appeal

Shelby’s Bed Recipe:

  • All white bedding
  • Four vertical sleeping pillows
  • Two small tonal lumbars
  • Fold back the duvet (just one time)
  • Add a folded throw blanket to the foot of the bed

Heather is Havenly’s design editor plus resident cozy queen, and her main bedroom is exhibit A. Her bedding look is perfect for those who love all things whimsy and cottage-inspired, starting with the Classic Wingback Bed from The Inside (in Blue Aviary). She stacks sleeping pillows, standard shams, and oversized pillows for a classic, hotel-inspired look. Her pro tip: fold your duvet twice for extra volume, and layer a textured throw at the foot of the bed for added coziness.

Heather’s Bed Recipe:

  • Tonal sheets and duvet
  • Four stacked horizontal sleeping pillows
  • Two king shams
  • Two 26-inch square pillows
  • Fold duvet back twice
  • Layer textured throw at the foot of the bed
