Stools turn a kitchen island or counter into a gathering spot—for morning coffee, homework, and conversation while you cook. Shop designer-curated bar and counter stools in the right heights, with and without backs.
Measure your counter or island. Counter-height stools (24–26-inch seat) suit a standard 36-inch counter; bar-height stools (28–30-inch seat) fit a 40–42-inch raised bar. Leave about 9–13 inches between the seat and the underside of the counter for legroom.
Allow about 26–30 inches of counter width per stool so people aren’t crowded, and leave a few inches at each end. A typical 6–7-foot island seats three comfortably. Backless stools tuck fully under the overhang and read less bulky when you need to save space.
Backless stools slide out of sight and keep sightlines open—best for quick perching and tight kitchens. Low-back and full-back stools (and swivels) add comfort for longer sitting. Swivel seats make it easy to turn toward the conversation or get in and out.
Kitchens are spill zones—wipeable wood, metal, molded seats, and performance or faux-leather upholstery hold up best. Look for floor-friendly feet and, for homes with kids, rounded edges and a stable, weighted base.

Plan about 26–30 inches of width per stool; a 6–7-foot island typically seats three with room to spare.
Aim for 9–13 inches between the seat top and the underside of the counter so knees fit comfortably.
Backless save space and keep a kitchen open; backs and swivels add comfort for longer sitting. Choose by how much you’ll linger.
