Layering outdoor light
Like indoors, layer three types: ambient (string lights, overhead) for overall glow, task (path and step lights, a sconce by the grill) for safety and function, and accent (uplighting a tree, a lantern centerpiece) for atmosphere. Layering keeps the space usable and inviting rather than flat or dim.
Outdoor lighting types

Wet-rated vs. damp-rated
