Last summer, behind-the-scenes shots of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling filming the upcoming Barbie movie sparked an aesthetic trend in a matter of minutes. And now, over a year later, the Greta Gerwig film is finally set to premiere in a matter of days. True to form, Barbiecore everything is at its absolute peak, fueled in part by the worldwide movie premieres starring Margot’s on-point Barbie ensembles.
And while stepping back into a Barbie world is as easy as picking up a hot pink hair scrunchie or neon bike shorts, we can’t help but ponder the set design itself. What is Barbie’s dream home going to look like on the big screen?! As interior designers, we decided to take a stab at it ourselves.
But First: Barbiecore in Interior Design
“Barbiecore embraces all that is fun, whimsical, and unabashedly bold,” says Havenly designer Heather Goerzen. “At home, it’s all about infusing spaces with optimism and powerful femininity, from imaginative silhouettes and dynamic patterns to a clever use of color — including Barbie’s signature pink.”
While we can’t wait to see see Margot Robbie lounging as Barbie in a bright pink interior, we’re curious to test out more muted interpretations of the Barbiecore trend. Our designers embrace all the shades of Barbie’s signature color in the following designs, from bubblegum pink to more understated, moody tones like berry, soft pastel pink, and dusty rose for a hint of subtlety.
“Above all, Barbiecore is about filling your home with objects, colors, and patterns you love,” adds Heather. “It’s a little 80s, a little 90s, a little early 2000s, and a whole lot of fun.” Ahead, step inside our take on Barbie’s dream home, 2023 version:
Barbiecore in the Bedroom
In Barbie’s bedroom, Havenly designer Kasee Smith went with an elevated, moody-luxe look complete with raspberry monochrome paint, statement lighting, and luxe materials like brass, velvet, and black marble (that fireplace, though!). Finished with tall ceilings, ornate crown moulding, and arched windows, the overall look is deco and delicious.
Barbiecore in the Dining Room
For the dining room, Havenly designer Kelsey Fischer took inspiration from “90s roller skate Barbie,” and it’s safe to say she nailed the assignment. Barbie’s signature neon pink features prominently, while retro accents like the holographic credenza, acrylic dining chairs, geometric area rug, bubble chandelier, and neon sign tie the space together. It’s Barbiecore perfection.
Barbiecore in the Living Room
For Barbie’s main living and entertaining space, Havenly designer Toussaint Derby went with a soft, sophisticated palette — a nod to Barbie’s professional side. She started with Benjamin Moore’s Malted Milk on the walls to set the scene, and decorated the space with curved, ultra-feminine furniture and warm brass accents. The floral-inspired pendant light is the perfect finishing touch for Barbie chic.
