After over a year of widespread tragedy and challenges beyond imagination, there have also been moments of hope, grace, and clarity. One thing that has taken on new meaning and focus is how much the home environment matters. Our surroundings affect our mental health, relationships, and day-to-day satisfaction, but most people don’t have access to significant home improvements. So we decided to help in the best way we know how — by sharing our expertise in interior design and curating dream spaces for two very incredible families.
We teamed up with FosterMore, an organization that advocates and provides resources for foster families, for bedroom makeovers that allowed three kids to put their own personal touches on their new forever homes.
FosterMore’s mission to change the narrative and better the future of youth in foster care is completely aligned with Havenly’s values — particularly that home is a welcoming sanctuary filled with warmth and comfort — and we’re honored to partner with them in this small way.
Once FosterMore connected us with the Watkins and Meneses families, our lead designers Brady Burke and Kelsey Fischer collaborated with them to weave the kids’ distinct personalities, styles, and interests into their bedrooms. The results are three totally different — yet equally joyful — spaces that we hope will enhance their homecoming celebration even more.
Nicholas's Colorful Hideaway
Nicholas is an active, vibrant boy who loves hiking and visiting Disneyland, so parents Chad Watkins and Jason Lass asked Brady to create a bedroom design to reflect that. Bold, primary colors give the space a bright and playful feel, while classic mid-century furniture achieves a clean and modern look.
Through graphic artwork, Brady highlighted Nicholas’s beloved Marvel superheroes like Spider-Man and Captain America. A cozy, geometric rug serves as a prime spot for Nicholas to build Legos — his favorite activity — and ladder-style shelving offers plenty of open storage for his collection of books and toys. “It has all my toys and we can play there all day,” Nicholas raves.
For Brady, the best part is the striking youthful aesthetic. “It is unique and colorful without feeling cluttered or overwhelming, and strikes the right balance between stylish, kid-friendly, and fun,” he muses. It flawlessly represents Nicholas’s energetic spirit.
Anthony's Musical Fort
When Kelsey had her consultation with the Meneses family, Anthony requested that his bed simulate the sensation of sleeping in a fort or tent. She completely delivered on the enclosed retreat vibe with a house bed frame and matching canopy that features fabric panels on all sides for privacy and a handy trundle for sleepovers with friends.
Of course, Kelsey took practical storage needs into consideration, too. She added a unit of cabinets and woven baskets to easily tuck away books, shoes, and toys. The highlight of the room, however, is the keyboard where Anthony and Cierra play music and sing together.
Cierra's Cool Refuge
Cierra’s priorities were pops of color, dark walls, and picture-perfect lighting. Kelsey completely understood the assignment, opting for deep burgundy accents, dramatic black paint, and Hollywood-style bulbs to illuminate the vanity and floor mirror. She even incorporated red LED strips beneath the bed that can be flipped on for evening ambiance.
According to the Meneses family, “Cierra likes to ‘vibe’ and lounge around her room doing her makeup and nails.” So Kelsey ensured that she would have ample surfaces and functional, tidy storage for clothes, accessories, makeup, and school supplies. It’s a teenage dream.
Thanks to Brady and Kelsey’s hard work and discerning taste, Nicholas, Anthony, and Cierra’s warm personalities are expressed in their new bedrooms.
